Day 57: Dick’s Creek Cap (Georgia) to Deep Gap (North Carolina)

Hike from Dick’s Creek Gap (GA) to Deep Gap (NC)
AT miles: 15.8
Ascent: 4064’
Descent: 2262’
Weather: partly sunny with temps in the mid-60’s
High points: finishing my Georgia section hike!

Today was a great day — I have now completed hiking the entire Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail!

Today’s hike had lots of humpty-dumps but no mountains of note. But I did have several decent views today.

I love seeing the sun shine through the misty mountains in the early morning!

I hiked up hill and down dale and eventually arrived at Bly Gap, noteworthy because it is where the AT crosses the GA/NC border.

There are no road crossings anywhere near the border, so I hiked an additional seven miles into NC before reaching a remote parking area and my shuttle.

North Georgia is lovely. It is as beautiful as Vermont, but without the mud on the trails. I would love to come back and do more hiking in the mountains of North Georgia!

I would like to give a shout out to Above the Clouds Hostel in Suches, Georgia. Lucky, the owner, not only provided amazing shuttle services, great conversation, and beer at the end of every hike, but also humor and support.

Nimrod, the hostel caretaker and an AT legend, cooked scrumptious meals, did lots of laundry for dirty hikers, and provided many stories and much information about the Trail. His sense of humor is legendary.

After a week of being spoiled at this wonderful hostel, going home will be a shock!

I also want to give a special shout out to the other four women who hiked the Georgia section with me. They were all thoughtful, kind, supportive, and funny — in other words, delightful people to spend a week with!

If you have ever thought about hiking the Appalachian Trail or you just want to try to do a long-distance walk, I highly recommend taking a walking vacation (aka doing a section hike of the AT in Georgia) based out of Above the Clouds Hostel!

Hiking the Georgia section of the AT was a real joy!

Today is a great day for a long walk in the woods!
