Day 133: Hike from Dennytown Rd Camp to RPH Shelter

It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well have not lived at all, in which case you have failed by default. ~J. K. Rowling

AT miles: 10.9
Ascent: 1105’
Descent: 1584’
Weather: warm and brilliantly sunny — around 70
Sightings: two hikers
High points: Solo hiking the entire day.

Cynthia is being my trail angel — she Took my gear and will pick me up at the end of my hike and bring me to a hotel! Slackpacking is the best!

About two miles in I bumped into a beautiful idea: a “telephone of the wind.” The original one was built in Japan after the tsunami by a man mourning his brother. This unusual sculpture is an unconnected rotary telephone upon which you can speak to loved ones who have died. What a beautiful idea!

After passing the memorial, the trail made a gentle ascent. The granite staircase was extremely helpful!

The trail meandered along Canopus Lake. After a seriously rocky climb, I reached a ledge that had an amazing view. I sat and enjoyed the wonderful day and the spectacular view.

The trail was sunny and open. After a gentle climb I reached the summit of Shenandoah Mountain (1060’), a granite outcropping with spectacular views.

Someone had painted a memorable 9-11 memorial.

I passed through an area that must have had a mini tornado a decade or so ago— so many trees were fallen that the area was almost impassable.

The benefit of hiking after a wet spring is that there are waterfalls everywhere!

Cynthia joined me for the last bit.

Nancy joined us, and we headed to the hotel. After a welcome shower and dinner at a restaurant, I am more than ready for sleep.

Today is a great day for a long walk in the woods!
