Day 88: Hike from MA Rt 2 to Melville Nauheim Shelter (near Bennington, VT)

Weather: Absolutely perfect— sunny and 70’s
Sightings: lots of hikers
High points: Successfully navigating the crazy descent into Rt 9, and now having less than 1000 miles left to go on the AT!
The beginning of the end of the AT in Vermont!

Day 86: Hike from Palmerton, PA, to Leroy A. Smith Shelter

Ascent: 2080’
Descent: 1110’
Weather: mid-70’s, partly sunny, and windy
Sightings: a chipmunk and a squirrel
High points: successfully hiking the super-steep section north of Lehigh Gapandhiking some more with Sparkplug.
A rocky walk through a Super Fund site with great views.

Day 85: Hike from Rt 309 to Palmerton, PA (Lehigh Gap)

Weather: sunny and low 70’s
Sightings: lots of butterflies
High points: surviving “knife edge” and hiking with Smooth and Carjack

Day 84: Hike from Hawk Mtn Rd / Eckville Shelter to Rt 309

Ascent: 1656’
Descent: 1006’
Weather: cloudy and cool (low 70’s)
Sightings: a rabbit and a chipmunk
High points: the fun conversation with Sparkplug from the Ozarks
Hiking with just a day pack is almost like floating!

Day 83: Hike from Reservoir Rd. to Eckville Shelter/Hawk Mtn Rd

Weather: mid-70’s, sunny, and dry
Sightings: a frog, a black snake, and a rattle snake
High points: Hiking Pulpit Rock with Erin and her two boys
